GEAR REVIEW -
| || |
It's been a while since I've reviewed gear!!!
Generally I've just been writing about the flow of awesome musicians and artists that have come through and worked here at The Submarine. So today I'm switching it up, and with good cause...
Introducing The Submarine's new main monitors, the Barefoot MM27s. Courtesy of my good friend XXXChange. Who luckily, at the time I was looking to invest in a decent high end set of monitoring, just happened to be in the process of selling his pair. These monitors are 1st gen and have been around for a minute, though over the past few years have definitely made their mark as an industry standard. We are proud to have a set of these monitors in our studio :)
So in a nutshell these speakers have totally stepped up the game here at The Submarine. They have opened up a whole new way of experiencing tracking, mixdowns, mastering and just simply listening to great music overall. For the most part I've always worked on a small set of Genelecs for fine tuned mix decisions but the lower sub frequencies were always in question to varying degrees. Especially when it came to heavy bass driven electronic productions. I've always had a subwoofer tuned to the Genelecs, but even so I never felt I was getting a clear enough picture of what was truly going on in the murky depths of the low end frequency band.
So basically the Barefoots are an integrated near-field speaker system. Each monitor is comprised of two long-throw 10-inch bass drivers with aluminium cones that are mounted on either side of each cabinet. With the front baffle containing three drivers in total, consisting of a 1-inch soft-dome tweeter and two 5-inch mid-range drivers. The cabinet is sealed and not reflex-ported which adds to the sub sonic clarity and detail you'd naturally expect from a high-end monitor of this caliber. The tweeter is powered by a 60 watt amp. The dual mid-range drivers share a 250 watt amp while the two subs are powered by a 500 watt beast. They are heavy speakers, coming in at around 70 pounds a piece so once they are setup you know they are not going anywhere.
Sound-wise they are amazing. The bass is well extended, super fast, detailed and clean. The mid-range is very dynamic that projects an insane clarity and punch that has totally changed the way I'm approaching not only mixing and mastering but production and song writing too. These speakers can be incredibly loud, but even at lower volumes the detail was still crystal clear. The stereo image appears nice and stable with a wide sweet spot and with the speakers set in a vertical position seemed to sound the best to my ears here in our control room.
Safe to say these new monitors are a game changer and we are happy to now offer clients beautiful high-end and detailed monitoring here at our studio. Whether its recording, mixing, mastering or simply a listening session these Barefoot MM27s will make you smile :)
