Contessa Stuto. The undisputed godmother of the NYC nightlife underground is back in full force with this gritty beast of a video for her new single Fresh Meat. This is the first of a handful of new material Contessa has been working on here at The Submarine.
The song, produced by Unusual Magic has an brooding, dark feel to it, unhinged like your being dragged through a lunatic asylum to your cell. Then there's that booming trap beat and massive bass that drives the whole production. Huge song, crazy video!
The track was mixed here and also mastered. One of my final in-house mastering jobs before I began mastering officially out JLM Sound in New Jersey.
Drootrax and Rena are back with another bratty bubble gum pop anthem titled "Over U". After the release of "Becky" and even further back "Jealous" that was worked into an Acura car commercial which gained the duo a legion of new fans, Over U remains true to this duos return to writing and producing ridiculously catchy pop tracks. These two have a great chemistry when it comes to the genre and each mix that arrives at the studio here gets tighter and more refined.
With plans for an EP launch of this new material come fall I'm super psyched to see this new direction unfold in full. All good things coming out of Philly and Brooklyn.
So what can I say!!! Again these guys are so much fun to work with. I've had the pleasure of recording, co-producing and mixing this beast of an album and it was definitely a journey. The music is super dope, intelligent and complex but totally catchy and danceable. Here's a video of the song Skull Pop which just dropped a couple of days ago. Check it..
The band, originally hailing from Boston and with a seemingly rotating cast of bass players recently made their home here in New York a little while back and since then have become the face of this city's ever evolving DIY scene. In times past they have put out a slew of genre and mind bending EP's and LP's on various labels, two of which (Erazer Stargazer and Flood Dosed) were tracked and mixed here also at The Submarine and released through DFA.
This new album is nothing short of monstrous in effort! It completely harnesses the GToss energy and eclecticism while at the same time evolving by way of a more refined, realized and methodically thought out approach to the recording and production process which definitely sets it apart.
Mixing this record was an intense task with songs that feel like they contain 4 songs in 1, massive track counts and automation rides for days. It was a huge challenge and I'm very humbled and grateful to have had the opportunity to again work with these guys on such a great album!!
Last week we saw new artist Michaelangelo drop his debut single Pull Up via the webs. This guy works super hard and has been here at The Submarine grinding on a handful of new material over the past couple of months as part of his launching the new profile as Michaelangelo.
Michael is the homie and personally I've known this guy since the true DIY warehouse party days of Brooklyn almost 10 years ago and I'm super psyched to be working with him on this project as the dude is an awesome rapper that keeps it very real across the board.
This first track here, Pull Up, has a real moody, druggy deepness to it. It pulls you in to a feeling of that real, gritty visceral NY. There's a darkness but it's executed just right in a way that makes the whole production super addictive to listen to.
Tracked, mixed (vocals), mastered here at The Submarine.
Another new track (that happened to escaped me) came out a little while back now by electro house pop duo Dootrax and Rena titled Becky. You may remember these guys had a song way back called Jealous that was released on Cobra Krames Gold Whistle label and was the featured sound track to the Acura TLX car commercial.
So these guys have done it again with this pop cross over banger. Rena's "I don't give a fuck" swagger over Dootrax super tight production. Check it out below
After dropping his debut full length "Cybersex" last year, Kevin Hussein is back with this fresh new single "Santos". Dude is a lyrical beast and with production by Johnny On The Rocks this track is deep and moody in all the right places. Subtle banger.
Vocals tracked here. Mixed and mastered here at The Submarine all day every day
After some hiatus exploring the world and other musical angles Queens native Vantum Noir has come back to tie up some old releases. With an albums worth of tracks he's looking to roll out over the next few, here's the first out of the gate.
Galactus Wave is a leftfield dreamy sci-fi piece with super washed out vocals in Vantum's signature deep low tone. Moody glitchy downtempo at it's finest and weirdest. Check it
